Colourful solution at creative pier

While waiting for new housing to be built, the old Oslo Pier in Helsingborg has become a centre for the unleashed creativity of city residents. With Danfo’s help, the toilets became part of the experience, too.

Once upon a time, the ferry stopped here on its way between Copenhagen and Oslo. Though residents still call it by its old name, Oslo Pier, the area has changed radically.

Today Pixla Pier, as it is known, is a creative centre for local residents. Anyone may borrow their own “pixel” – a 10 by 10 metre area – and use it for essentially anything they like. The area has thus been transformed from a somewhat depressing no man’s land into an aesthetically exciting destination. Shipping containers have been placed here and there and painted in strong colours, with the walls painted by graffiti artists.

“The goal was to create a total package that would be attractive, especially to young people of school age,” says Georg Hermann, construction engineer for the City of Helsingborg.

It seems to have worked – in the summertime in particular, Pixla Pier is a popular meeting place for young people. Gardens, skating areas and volleyball courts have been created in the area, and much more is under way. Anywhere many people congregate, toilets are needed. The City of Helsingborg wanted its new service building to fit the setting, and with Danfo as their supplier, they found a solution as attractive as it was cost-effective. By covering a Tetragon 110 with sheet-metal panels finished in bright colours, they achieved exactly the effect they were hoping for. And when the building is no longer needed at Pixla Pier, it will be easy to move it and redo the exterior to suit a different setting.

“We purchase public toilets on an ongoing basis, and for us it’s essential to be able to adapt them to different settings,” says Georg Hermann. “If a toilet will be situated next to a wood, we choose wooden panelling, in a more old-fashioned setting we might choose a traditional Swedish style with Falu red paint and white corner posts, and so on. We like Danfo because their products are so easy to adapt.”

The City of Helsingborg has established a framework agreement with Danfo for procurements of public toilets. In this way, they avoid the need for a full procurement process every time they want to place a new building somewhere in the municipality.

“I am extremely pleased that Danfo won the procurement contract,” says Georg Hermann. “They are committed and happy to take responsibility, which means we don’t have to keep an eagle eye on projects at all times. It makes my job much easier.”
